In the Marvel Universe, a group of immortal beings protect Earth from intergalactic conquerors. They are known as the Eternals and some members were recently introduced in an animated series on Disney+.
The “Who are the Eternals?” is a question that has been asked for years. The answer to this question is that they are immortal defenders of humanity. They were created by the goddess Athena and their mission was to protect mankind from evil forces. Read more in detail here: who are the eternals.
A Story That Has Been Told Forever
“We have observed and guided,” Ajak says. We’ve aided them in their development and seen their achievements. We have never intervened throughout the years. “Until now,” she says.
Eternals are people who live forever (2021)
A ancient metropolis wakes up to a new day. Slave-like creatures of many kinds prowl the streets, followed by human slaves. As an aged slave falls, a monstrous beast frowns. He lifts a whip to beat the slave, but his hand is severed by an energy beam. The creature cries as it knows the ancient adversaries are attacking.
A crimson blur runs through the ranks of the beasts, disarming their guardians in the blink of an eye. Two fighters were able to slash through whole armies. A youngster hypnotizes dozens of animals, while hundreds of others shiver as an imposing guy brings their worst nightmares to reality. A blue-clad guy flies across the sky, unleashing lasers from his eyes, which incinerate the monsters. They depart the city as The Eternals celebrate their victory.
The Eternals are a lesser-known Marvel species. They were formed a long time ago and have been protecting the Earth since the time of the cavemen. So, who exactly are they? How did they get their abilities? What is their link to one of Marvel’s most infamous villains? Let’s have a look.
The Eternals’ Backstory: Celestials, Eternals, and Deviants, Oh My!
“What if I told you you’d lost your memories, but you were half-a-million years old and possessed abilities you’d never imagined?” Ikaris says.
Vol. 3 #1 of The Eternals
In 1976, The Eternals made their debut in The Eternals #1. They were created by Jack Kirby, who returned to Marvel after a spell at DC Comics and wanted to continue his unfinished series The New Gods. Before the higher-ups titled it and the squad The Eternals, the series was meant to be called The Celestials or The Return of The Gods.
A species of aliens known as The Celestials visited Earth in the distant past and experimented on the people. Their intervention resulted in the emergence of two human subspecies: The Deviants, a horrific mutant race, and The Eternals, a far smaller group of superhumans. After handing down three rules to The Eternals, the Celestials left: “guard The Celestials, protect The Machine (Earth), and remedy excess deviation.”
While The Deviants multiplied and expanded, the Eternals dwelt apart from mankind, ultimately conquering the earth and enslaving humanity. To stop The Deviants, The Eternals broke their solitude. They were outnumbered, so they called The Celestials for assistance, which resulted in a holocaust that almost annihilated The Deviants.
The Eternals started roving the planet after The Deviants seemed to have vanished for forever. They taught humanity knowledge and culture on several times, leading to their veneration as gods. The Eternals retreated into seclusion as the millennia passed.
The Eternals’ History: Eternal Recurrence
“Blast this century of global conflicts, mini-warfare, and guerrilla wars!” Zuras exclaims. Are we about to resurrect a cosmic conflict?!”
#5 in The Eternals Vol. 1
During World War II, the Eternals started to reintegrate into human civilization. The budding Mutant species and fellow upgraded humans, The Inhumans, as well as the burgeoning era of superheroes, piqued their interest. Some Eternals went on to become heroes, while others became celebrities, spies, or wanderers.
Sprite, an Eternal, betrayed the crew by wiping their memories and robbing them of their abilities. After millennia as a youngster, Sprite wanted to experience life as a regular person. The Eternals were dispersed over the world. The majority of them had no recollection of their history.
Several Eternals came into touch with each other due to a sequence of coincidences, which restored their abilities and part of their memories. After fighting off a Deviant army, the core squad rejoined to search for the rest of their species and recover their memories.
The Eternal’s Powers: Immortal Combat
“So you’re telling me a hundred individuals took on millions?” Makkari asks. That’s not a battle; it’s a slaughter.” “When the hundred can’t be killed, it becomes a struggle,” Ikaris says.
Vol. 3 #1 of The Eternals
The Eternals have a long lifespan, are very durable, and have healing abilities. Over the course of their life, they have acquired a wide range of scientific and fighting specialties. Each has their own special abilities. Mutants and other superbeings were created as a result of Deviants and Eternals interbreeding with humans.
When an Eternal dies, he or she does not remain dead for long. The Celestials provided them with a “Reactivation Chamber” that allows them to revive. It may also be utilized to change their looks, which they do every few millennia on average. What? No, it was not added to make certain Eternals appear more like the actors who will portray them in the 2021 film. That’s ridiculous.
Get to know the Eternals.
Gemma Chan is the actress that plays the role of Gemma Chan. Circe was the inspiration for this piece (Greek Mythology)
“Circe of the legends!” exclaims Margo. “You’re Circe!” exclaims the narrator. “The Greek storytellers could never spell my name correctly!” Sersi says. Those scumbags, on the other hand, I turned into pigs.”
Vol. 1 #4 of The Eternals
Sersi may not seem as frightening as some of the more outspoken Eternals, but she is the group’s most powerful member.
Sersi possesses the capacity to control matter and build illusions. Sersi has perfected the second ability to the point that even Eternals instructor Zuras is terrified of her. It’s difficult to determine where Sersi’s illusions finish and her genuine changes begin once she starts rolling.
Sersi was the first Eternal to transform into a superhero. Sersi’s hedonistic tendencies earned her a poor record, but her heroic character makes up for it. She became a member of The Avengers and has had many affairs with her partner, The Black Knight (Kit Harrington in Eternals 2021).
Richard Madden is the actor that plays the role of Richard Madden. Icarus (Greek Mythology), Superman are some of the sources of inspiration (DC Comics)
“Then the moment of subtlety is passed,” Ikaris says. Follow me, Eternals! “Death is the game!”
#11 in Eternals Vol. 2
Because Superman is one of DC’s most popular characters, it’s only inevitable that Marvel would have a few characters that steal him off—er, I mean, copy him. That’s Ikaris, the team’s field commander, for the Eternals.
He has superhuman strength, endurance, flying, psychic abilities, and the capacity to channel cosmic energy via his eyes. Ikaris, unlike his inspiration, enjoys fighting and, if not restrained, is ruthless.
To socialize with people, Ikaris often assumes the persona of mild-mannered Ike Harris. When he fell in love with a lady called Margo and took her and her scientist father to their home base, he exposed The Eternals to mankind.
Kumail Nanjiani plays the role of Kumail Nanjiani. N/A was the source of inspiration for this piece.
“You’re going to face the best warriors the world has ever seen,” Kingo says.
Eternals are people who live forever (2021)
What’s the use of having superpowers if you don’t need them? All you need is a good set of armor and a sharp sword on occasion. Kingo, on the other hand, isn’t afraid to use his abilities.
Kingo has lived in Japan for the most of his life. He acquired a passion for the Samurai way of life and spent generations perfecting his skills. He became a movie star in the contemporary period so that he could create samurai films. This will be replaced by Indian and Bollywood films in the 2021 film.
Lia McHugh is the actress that plays Lia McHugh. Puck (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Peter Pan (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) were inspirations for this piece.
“It wasn’t simply illusion I was messing with,” Sprite says. This was the truth. And by the time I was done, I’d made some changes. There were no Eternals to be found. Just a hundred more oblivious mayflies flitting over the globe.”
#5 in The Eternals Vol. 3
People constantly underestimate the Fair Folk, despite my repeated warnings. Sprite is a manipulative jerk, no matter how innocent they seem.
Sprite is the only Eternal whose body has never developed, making them one of a kind among The Eternals. They had grown tired of being a kid for millennia and devised a plan to transform into a human. Sprite turned all of the Eternals into humans by channeling the power of one of the Celestials. Sprite was slain as a result of their treachery, but was recently revived in a feminine body.
Sprite is a great illusionist, but his physique is juvenile, limiting his abilities. No one takes the Eternal seriously since they seem to be youthful, enabling them to slip under the radar and become a huge danger.
Brian Tyree Henry plays the lead role. Hephaestus was the source of inspiration for this piece (Greek Mythology)
“I’m simply killing The Eternals,” Phastos says. “I’m not going to ruin the planet.”
#5 in The Eternals Vol. 5
In the superhero movie genre, the MCU has made a lot of ground. Phastos, the first openly homosexual MCU hero, is introduced in Eternals.
Phastos is a skillful blacksmith who is sometimes mistaken with Hephaestus, the Greek deity. With the help of his technopathic powers, he invented the majority of the Eternals’ weapons and equipment.
Phastos recently turned against the crew after learning that the Reactivation Chamber can only revive Eternals if a random human is killed to give the “spark.” He has vowed to exterminate all Eternals in order to protect the innocent humanity, even if it means destroying the Earth.
Lauren Ridlof is the actress that plays Lauren Ridlof. Mercury was the inspiration for this piece (Roman Mythology)
Makkari: “I shall not hesitate to cease to exist in order to preserve the humans, the Eternals, and you.”
Eternals, Vol. 4, No. 1
Phastos isn’t the only Eternals member who has made history. Lauren Ridlof (The Walking Dead) will portray Makkari, the MCU’s first deaf superhero.
Makkari gave up practically all of her Eternal abilities to improve her speed. She can run at light speed for long periods of time, yet she suffers from exhaustion.
Makkari was the central figure in the arc in which The Eternals evolved into humans. Makkari became a messianic figure as a result of her quest to awaken the rest of their kind. When they became the prophet of Tiamut, the Dreaming Celestial, their transformation was complete.
Barry Keoghan is the actor that plays the character. Loki was the inspiration for this piece (Norse Mythology)
“Now, I understand you have an ally among The Eternals who has been aiding you.” Druig: “I understand you have an ally among The Eternals who has been assisting you.” This offends me tremendously. You needed a traitor, but you didn’t come to me first?”
#5 in the Eternals Vol. 5 series
The Eternals are not all good. Sprite is a brash little brat, but Druig is the bad guy.
The self-proclaimed Lord of Nightmares has the ability to read people’s thoughts and use their greatest fears in order to influence them. Druig can also conjure fire and has no qualms about destroying anyone who stand in his path.
Druig is a devious character who would throw anybody under the bus for his personal gain or just because he feels like it. He finally utilized his abilities to conquer the imaginary kingdom of Vorozheika, persuading the other Eternals to stay out of it.
The One Who Was Forgotten
Don Lee is the actor that plays Don Lee. Others, based on: The Epic of Gilgamesh (Babylonian Mythology), The Epic of Gilgamesh (Babylonian Mythology), The Epic of Gilgamesh (B
“I don’t feel like I belong in this world anymore, Herak,” Gilgamesh says. I’ve been forgotten. “I’m not sure what I’m good for.” “You’re a hero, Gil,” Hercules says. And the world will never run out of them.” “Not our sort, Herak,” Gilgamesh says. We don’t have capes, rocket boots, or anything related to web-shooters.” “Perhaps,” Hercules says. But, Gil, we’ve got a lot of experience. More than the majority. More than everyone else. Gil, I’m going to get you back in the game. You may assist me in creating some new myths.”
Vol. 4 #1 (Hercules)
The Eternals are a very ancient race. You can bet they’ll forget certain things as time passes. Only the Forgotten One has forgotten his own name.
The Forgotten One refused to be forgotten by mankind and traveled the globe, assisting people in need. He claims to be Gilgamesh, Samson, Beowulf, and other mythological characters you may remember from our Top 5 Mythological Superheroes list.
The Eternals dislike the Forgotten One because he constantly meddles in mundane affairs. Because his acts are mistaken with theirs and vice versa, many pantheons and ancient heroes are at odds. Despite millennia of hatred from his peers, he has persisted to battle for others. The Forgotten One goes by many names, but only one term suits him: Hero.
Salma Hayek stars as Quetzalcoatl and is inspired by him (Aztec Mythology)
“My name is Ajak,” says Ajak. I am He Who Interacts with the Celestials. “I am your friend.”
Vol. 3 #4 of the Eternals
Although being self-sufficient is an important ability, it’s always helpful to have someone who can call the employer when necessary. Fortunately, the Eternals have Ajak to help them out.
Ajak is The Eternals’ second-in-command and the team’s connection with The Celestials, whom they revere. After Sprite’s treachery, Ajak was one of the few Eternals that remembered who they were and used their allies to awaken them.
Angelina Jolie stars in the film. Athena was the source of inspiration for this piece.
“Our objective is to bring all of our species together to deal peacefully with the Space-Gods,” Thena says.
Vol. 1 #6 of The Eternals
When compared to their genetically enhanced supremacy, the Eternals sometimes see humanity as inferior. Thena is one of the rare people who is constantly on the side of mankind.
Thena is the princess of the Eternal leader Zuras since she is his daughter. She is a skilled warrior, and only Ikaris and The Forgotten One can compete with her for the title of finest fighter.
Thena married and had a kid called Joey while stuck in human form. After reverting to an Eternal and realized she would outlast him, this caused her a great deal of distress. Despite this, Thena opted to remain with her son, even threatening to kill her own father when he ordered her to abandon him.
Josh Brolin stars in this film. Darkseid and Metron were the sources of inspiration for this piece (DC Comics: New Gods)
“Death to Him Whom Death Despises!” Kingo exclaims. “Murder for the killer!” exclaims the narrator. “Murderer,” Thanos says. Please don’t make fun of me. Murder is only a note. “I am the greatest composer of all time.”
Vol. 5 #4 of The Eternals
Although the Eternals are mysterious, there is one who is well-known. The Infinity Saga’s antagonist. The Mad Titan, Thanos, is an Eternal.
Thanos was born to an Eternal pair that lived on Titan’s moons. His mother tried to murder him on sight since he was born with a genetic abnormality that made him seem like a Deviant. He killed a bully as a youth and perceived Death as a personification. Thanos fell in love with her, and in order to see her again, he became a cosmic dictator and serial murderer.
Check out Thanos’ background if you want to learn more about him.
